William Harold Howard, age 92 of Dayton went to be with his Lord Friday morning, March 13, 2009 at his home. He was born in Sale Creek on August 20, 1916 the son of the late Walter and Hattie (Shipley) Howard and was also preceded in death by his wife, Opal Arnold Howard.
Harold was a graduate of the Sale Creek High School and had attended UTK. Harold served his country as a Captain with the US Army during WWII, serving in the European Theatre receiving two purple hearts. He retired as a Registered Professional Environmentalist with the Hamilton County Health Department in Chattanooga. Harold was a long time member of the Garrison Baptist Church where he has served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Antoinette (Owens) Howard of Dayton and Chattanooga, his son, Robert Lee Howard of Pocahontas, AR, two grandchildren, Jennifer Leigh Howard of Birmingham, AL and Kevin Howard of Rogers, AR, one great-granddaughter Grace Elizabeth Howard of Birmingham, two step-daughters, Janice Bell and Judy Olive, both of Chattanooga, step-grandson Chip Bell and his brother, Paul Howard of Sarasota, FL.
Funeral services for Mr. Howard will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm at his church, Garrison Baptist Church, with Rev. Mike Breeden and Rev. Barry Purser officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Buttram Cemetery followed by a white dove release.
The family is being served by the Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton where they will receive friends Saturday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. Mr. Howard will also lie in state at the church Sunday one hour prior to his service.
