Van Buren “V.B.” Hart, Jr., age 86 of Birchwood died Monday evening, January 28, 2008 in Rhea Medical Center in Dayton. Van was born in Rosiclare, IL on April 21, 1921 the son of the late Van and Gertrude (Allen) Hart. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Athalie Crook and his step-father, William Woodside.
Van was a life long businessman formerly as an owner in the motel business and feed store business. He lived a very full and accomplished life. Van loved flying his plane, working with air conditioning, silversmithing, and even at age 80 he became accomplished on the computer. Van could fix anything!
Van was raised in southern Illinois and lived in Rocky Ford, CO from 1959-1969; Zion, IL from 1969-1999 at which time he moved to Birchwood, TN.
While living in Birchwood he was a member of the Birchwood Baptist Church and the Birchwood Seniors Club where he loved to tell stories and considered this his ministry. At the seniors club he was known as “Van the card man”. He was a wonderful and caring husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all.
Van is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ursa (Gass) Hart, three daughters, Patricia (Thomas) Miller, Linda (Lynn) Griffiths, Cynthia (Harry) Long; two sons, William (Carol) Hart, Jimmy (Sue) Hart all of Birchwood; two sisters-in-law, Wanda (Gass) Chaffin of Park Forest, IL, Hazel Gass of Joliet, IL and brother-in law, Paul (Donice) Gass of Dayton, TN. Van is also grandfather to 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandsons.
Funeral services for Van will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor David Delmotte officiating. Burial with a white dove release will be in the McInturff Cemetery in Birchwood, TN.
The family is being served by the Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton where they will receive friends Thursday from 3:00pm until 7:00pm.
