Sister Opal Scott

Opal Izetta Scott, age 85 of Dayton went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Saturday morning, January 28, 2012. She was born in Speedwell, TN on May 10, 1926 the daughter of the late Fate and Olivia (Bowman) Monday. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. R.T. Scott, her sister, Jean Claiborne, brother, Bill Monday and niece, Beverly Johnson.
She was educated at the Speedwell Academy, Powell Valley High School Class of 1944, Lee College (Bible College) and was an ordained Church of God pastor for over 60 years. During WWII she worked on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge and received a commendation from President Roosevelt for her suggestion on the atomic bomb. She had also been employed as a telephone operator in Lafollette, TN, worked with the Rhea County Department of Education during the 60’s and retired from Eckerd’s in 1990.
As a pastor’s wife, she served with her husband in churches in Sale Creek, Columbia, Lewisburg, Oneida and Graysville until her husband’s untimely death in 1971.
Sister Scott was a member of the Dayton Church of God since 1974 where she taught Sunday school for 38 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years, serving as their Chaplain. She also was a volunteer at Rhea Medical Center for over 50 years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed yard work and took great pride in her flowers.
She is survived by her daughter Janie (Billy) Graham and grandson Tripp Graham of Dayton, two sisters, Margaret Bailey of Speedwell and Wreva Heatherly of Cocoa, FL, one niece, Sharon Parks of Lafollette, nephews, Bill Bailey of Speedwell and Ronnie Scott of Graysville, one great-niece, Heather Parks of Knoxville.
Funeral services for Sister Scott will be held Monday evening at 7:00pm at the Dayton Church of God with Rev. Darrell Smith and Rev. Jewell Travis officiating. Sister Scott will be laid to rest next to her husband in Rhea Memory Gardens on Tuesday at 12 noon.
The family will receive friends at the church Monday after 3:00pm.
