Samuel Washington, age 91 of Dayton, passed Friday September 16, 2011 at Rhea Medical Center. He was born May 10, 1920 in Earles, AR to the late Columbus and Fannie (Taylor) Washington. He was also preceded in death by his wife Martha Lee (Angel) Washington and sisters Odell Washington and Zana Washington.
Samuel served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in Germany, France and England. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and two Battle Stars. He moved to Dayton after his military service and worked for the TVA as a heavy equipment operator for almost 40 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 365 in Spring City, the Lions Club and the American Legion Post #100 and was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
He is survived by his sons Nathaniel Washington of Chattanooga, Tracy Washington of Dayton and Robert Lee Williams of Dallas, TX, daughter Andrea (Norman) Smith of Cleveland, sisters Martha Savage of California and Rosa Lee Pugh of Chicago, IL, ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 12:00 noon in the funeral home chapel with Rev. James Guthrie, Rev. Robert Henderson and Rev. Donald Daniels officiating. Masonic services will be conducted by the Spring City Masonic Lodge 365 F & AM. Burial with military honors will be in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton.
