Rev. William Benson Cather, Jr., age 90, went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 10, 2011, in Soddy Daisy Health Care Center. He was born February 2, 1921 in Roanoke, VA to the late William Benson Cather, Sr. and Ruth (Lucado) Cather. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Violet (Oberman) Cather.
Rev. Cather served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp serving in the European Theatre. He was a graduate of Columbia Bible College in Columbia, SC. He pastored churches in the Barbourville, KY area as well as in TN in the Huntsville, Spring City and Dayton areas. His home church was the Euclid Ave. Baptist Church in Bristol, VA. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dayton.
After moving to Dayton in 1958, he began working at Bryan College and worked until 1986 as Maintenance Mechanic and Carpenter. He was known affectionately as “Preacher”.
He is survived by his four daughters, Laura Cather and Lynda Cather, both of Dayton, Diana (Paul) Faulkner of Hixson and Jenny (Rev. Rick) Odum of Byron, GA, brother Douglas (Sarah) Cather of Lebanon, TN, six granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Rev. Cather will be Wednesday at 5:00 pm in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Milton Knox officiating. Burial will be in the Ogden Cemetery.
