Michael Watkins Long, age 59 of Dayton died unexpectedly at his home Sunday afternoon, July 25, 2010. Mike was born in Chickamauga, GA on April 25, 1951, “The year the grass was so green” as he loved to say.
Mike was a 1969 graduate of the Tennessee Military Institute and lived in Chattanooga until moving to Dayton in 1974. Mike retired as a Tennessee Wildlife Resource Officer in 2008 and also was an accomplished farmer, ferrier, blacksmith, auctioneer, horseman and conservationist. He added to his resume real estate agent after his retirement. Mike was also a member of the New Union Baptist Church.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Scholze Long and Barbara (Watkins) Long and his brother, Robert Scholze Long II.
He is survived by the love of his life whom he married on the first day of Spring, March 20, 1976, Phyllis (Key) Long. He is also survived by his son, Matthew “Matt” Michael (Darya) Long and his daughter, Bethany “Beth” (Casey) Pendleton, four grandchildren, Jackson Oliver Long, Logan Asa Long, Avery Scholze Alday and Joshua Caleb Pendleton, all of Dayton. Also surviving is his brother, Sim Perry (Gail) Long of Athens, sister, Melinda Long Trotter of Nashville and his nephew, Robert Scholze Long III.
Graveside funeral services will be held for Mike Tuesday morning at 10:00am at Spivey Cemetery in Dayton with Dr. Danny Ruehling officiating. He will be laid to rest next to his brother Robert.
The family is being served by the Vanderwall Funeral Home where they will receive friends Monday after 6:00pm.
