Merton Lonnie “Joe” Jones, age 82, of Dayton died Friday, April 4, 2014 in Dayton. He was born March 18, 1932 in Detroit, MI to the late Lonnie and Cecelia (Carlson) Jones. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Sylvia (Eversole) Jones, his second wife, Maxine (Bullen) Jones, and his brother, James Jones.
A former resident of Western Australia, Mississippi and Alabama, Joe was a recent resident of Dayton. He retired as a Master Sergeant in the US Marine Corp where he served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Joe was a member of Dayton First Baptist Church.
Joe is survived by his nine children, son, David (Nancy) Daniels of Magnolia, TX; daughter, Melinda (Peter) Robinson of Evensville; son, Bige (Josephine) Jones of Western Australia; daughter, Charlotte Jones of Western Australia; son, James “Hardin” (Sheila) Jones of Pass Christian, MS; son, Gary (Eileen) Jones of Diamond Head, MS; son, Robert Jones of TX; daughter, Helen (Earnie) Robinson of Spring City; son, Kevin (Dina) Jones of Dayton; his brother, Ted (Lynn) Jones, sisters, Shirley (Charlie) Gates and Betty Jones, all of Dayton; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Joe will be held Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Milton Knox and Mr. Les Warren officiating. He will be laid to rest with full military honors next to his wife in the Chattanooga National Cemetery Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
