Lucy Elizabeth Powell age 96 of the Brayton Community passed away Sunday morning April 15, 2018 at Rhea Medical Center.
She was born in Jackson County, AL on July 2, 1921 the daughter of the late Robert Joseph and Lillie (Goins) Motes. She was also preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Howard Grant Powell, her daughter, Jane Elizabeth Powell, four brothers, Hubert Motes, Doc Motes, Charlie Motes and Pete Motes, and two sisters, Inda Reeves and Josie Higgins.
Lucy was a longtime resident of the Brayton Community. She served her country with the US Army WAC during WWII. She earned her Licensed Practical Nurse degree and retired from Rhea Medical Center after many years of care giving. She also actively volunteered at the hospital. Lucy was a member of the Brayton Baptist Church, then attended New Union Baptist Church and most recently attended Corvin Road Baptist Church. She reigned as the Senior Fairest at the Fair Queen for 2016.
She was an avid quilter, enjoyed sewing, especially dresses and was active with Sewing for Souls which involved making and sending her handmade dresses overseas.
She is survived by her six children, Joseph (Brenda) Powell of Knoxville, Kenneth (Vickie) Powell of Graysville, Mary Swafford of Dayton, Becky (Tommy) Hart of Soddy Daisy, Beth (Cliff) Gould of Soddy Daisy and Linda (Gary) Roddy of Hixson. She is also survived by her brother Robert Motes of Birchwood, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services with Military Honors for Lucy will be held Tuesday evening at 7:00pm in the funeral home chapel with her pastors, Rev. Steve James and Dr. Danny Ruehling officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Brayton Cemetery followed by a white dove release Wednesday morning at 11:00am.

The family is being cared for by the Vanderwall Funeral Home where they will receive friends Tuesday after 4:00pm.
