John R. Cary, Sr., 95, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2008, at his son’s home.
John was born in Russell, KY, and raised in West Virginia as a son of a railroad engineer. He graduated with an engineering degree from Purdue University where he met his wife, Mary. After several moves, they settled in Dayton, TN, where they raised their family and operated a business partnership for 32 years. During this time, John was very involved in the local Methodist church and in many activities in support of the community. Upon retirement, Mary and John moved to Fairfield Glade, TN, where they made many new friends that they so enjoyed in a wide variety of activities. While at Fairfield Glade, he was active in the Fairfield Glade Community Church.
John had a zest for living. He loved gardening; enjoyed music though he insisted he could not carry a tune, welcomed opportunities to help anyone and developed into a pretty fair golfer after the age of 65.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of 73 years, his three children, Dr. Elizabeth Cary Harper, Jackson, MS, Colonel (Retired) John R. (Bob) Cary, Jr., Chattanooga, TN and Margie Lineberry, Atlanta, GA, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at Rhea Memory Gardens at 3:00 pm Friday. The family will receive friends at Vanderwall Funeral Home from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Friday.
The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers whom have provided loving care for these last years and the employees at the Lantern of Collegedale. A special thanks to the pastors and “Care Bears” of Tyner Methodist Church for the love and care they have consistently shown for John during his stay in Chattanooga.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to the Care Bear ministry at Tyner Methodist Church or to Trinity Hospice.
