Jacob Brantley Griffin, Jr. “Griff”, age 88 of Dayton, passed away Monday, July 27, 2020 at his home in Dayton. He was born on December 21, 1931 in Dayton, the son of the late Jacob Brantley Griffin, Sr. and Rhoda Montgomery Griffin. Griff was also preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Goldston and his grandson, Todd Montgomery.
Griff lived in Dayton most of his life and was a graduate of Rhea Central High School Class of 1950. He earned his associate degree in Dental Technology at both University of North Carolina and University of Minnesota. Griff operated Jaybee Dental Laboratory from 1972-2013. He served his country as a medic in the US Army. Griff was a true patriot, a member of Sons of American Legion, a member of the Chattanooga Area Veteran Council Rifle Team, founding member of the Benjamin Cleveland Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and was on the development team that designed the IBM copier. He was founder of the American Bible Protestant Church, founder of Cumberland Missionary Society, member of Sons of American Revolution and Sons of Revolution, founder of Old Path Publishers. Since 1984, he and June were pioneers in the home school movement. Griff was a member of the Nazarene Church.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, June Cook Griffin of Dayton; his son, Jacob B. (Stacy) Griffin, III of Evensville; daughters, Deborah Oakley of Savannah, TN and Brenda Guardala of Maryland; nine grandchildren, Matthew Oakley, Michael Oakley, Daniel Oakley, Hannah Griffin, Jake Griffin, David Griffin, Silas Griffin, Nathaniel Griffin and Jennifer Rose; and many great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Griff will be held Thursday morning, July 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Rolin Mitchell officiating. He will be laid to rest Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
