Dr. Glynn Nelson Stone, Sr., age 84 of Dayton, passed away on March 15, 2026. He was born to Beulah Daniels Stone and Leola “Lee” Stone on August 30, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but lived most of his life in Florida. He and his wife moved to Dayton, Tennessee in 2017.
Dr. Stone’s life included work in ministry, music, and missions. He served as a Southern Baptist minister in churches in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. He also participated in mission efforts that delivered medical equipment in other countries.
He served in the United States Army as a paratrooper in the Green Berets, a chaplain assistant, and a medical specialist. He then went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of South Florida. He attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and eventually earned a Master’s degree in Christian Education and a Doctorate in Christian Education from the North Florida Baptist Theological Seminary in Jacksonville, Florida. He was a member of Dayton First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Beulah Stone, and his son, Glynn Nelson Stone, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Faith Lynnette (Coates) Stone of Dayton; daughters, Adina (Gary) Scruggs and Annette (Jarrel) Watt, both of Dayton; daughter-in-law, Angie Stone of Longview, TX; grandchildren, Kendall, Jacob (Addie), and Natalie Scruggs, all of Dayton; Jenna and Melissa Watt, both of Dayton; Glynn Nelson “Trey” Stone III, Luke, and Colt Stone, all of Texas; and great-grandson Levi Scruggs. He is also survived by siblings, Ralph Stone of Lindale, Texas, and Anita Loy (Bob) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
The family expresses gratitude to the caregivers at the Courtyard and the Hearth Hospice team who provided compassionate care in his final days.
Funeral services for Glynn with US Army military honors will be in the funeral home chapel on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. with his family, Rev. Milton Knox, and Rev. Bob Schafer officiating. He will be laid to rest in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
