Clair Ernest “Dutch” Baughman age 88 went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday afternoon, December 2, 2011 and was joined by his wife of 65 years Edna the following afternoon. Both Dutch and Edna entered their heavenly home from their home in Apison while surrounded by their family.
Dutch was born in Saxton, PA on December 28, 1922 the son of the late Charles Irvin Baughman and Annie Bell (Hoover) Baughman. Edna was born in Roaring Springs, PA on November 29, 1923 the daughter of the late Charles Weist Russell and Mary Alice (Higgins) Russell.
Dutch and Edna were married on June 30, 1946 and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. They formerly lived in Pennsylvania, Florida and Evensville, TN until living with their daughters in Apison, TN in recent years.
Dutch earned his bachelor of science degree at Lock Haven State Teacher’s College and retired as a physical education instructor and coach. He served his country during WWII with the US Navy aboard the USS Luzon. He was a member of the VFW and had served as a church officer while living in Florida.
Edna was a homemaker and a member of the VFW auxillary, had also served as a church officer in Florida and was a girl scout leader for 25 years. Both Dutch and Edna were members of Grace Bible Church and the XYZ’ers of the church.
They are survived by their children, Charles (Sandi) Baughman of Evensville, Maryjo Baughman of Apison and Paula (Jeff) Otto of Apison, three grandchildren, Rhonda (Scott) Guffey of McDonald, Chad (Marcie) Baughman of Greeneville and Michael Otto of Apison, five great-grandchildren, Seth Guffey, Justin Guffey, Noah Baughman, Kendal Baughman and Ella Baughman. Dutch is also survived by his brother, Daniel Baughman of Lancaster, PA and his sister, Delores (Bob) Mears of Saxton, PA. Edna is also survived by two sisters, Annie (Bruce) Diehl of Columbus, OH and Nancy Little of Orange City, FL. Both are survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
Graveside services for Dutch and Edna will be held Thursday afternoon at 12:30pm at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. David Hobbs and Rev. John Fields officiating. Military honors will follow for Dutch. They will then be laid to rest next to each other sharing the same casket and grave.
