Carlos Olen Thurman

Carlos Olen Thurman, age 86 of Ringgold, Georgia, a beloved father and grandfather, passed away in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 24, 1938, in Spring City, Tennessee, to the late Oscar Register Thurman and Mayme (Wright) Thurman.

A graduate of Spring City High School, Class of 1957, Carlos later earned an Associate degree in science from Brevard College in Florida. His professional life was defined by a deep sense of purpose and pride, particularly during his time as a NASA Senior Planner for the Apollo missions at the Kennedy Space Center from 1966 to 1972. In this role, he was responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing launch operations and tests, as well as monitoring launches to ensure all necessary support was provided. He attended East Brainerd Baptist Church.

He is survived by his sons, Scott Thurman of Atlanta, Georgia, and Kelvin (Jennifer) Thurman of Ringgold, Georgia; his daughter, Sonya (John) Picklesimer of Soddy-Daisy; his three grandchildren, Jared (Peyton) Sheets, Rachel (Bryce) Mantooth, and Nicole Thurman; his three great-grandchildren, Piper Sheets, Parker Sheets, and Sunday Mantooth; his brother Ronald Thurman of Hixson, Tennessee; and many special nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service will be held at Gentry Cemetery on Dayton Mountain in Bledsoe County with Rev. David McNabb officiating. Carlos will be laid to rest alongside his loved ones.
