Avery H. McCowan age 79 of Dayton passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at a Chattanooga hospital. He was born in Overton County on April 17, 1944 the son of the late Burton and Martha (Phipps) McCowan. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Otis McCowan and two sisters, Mazelle McCowan and Artie Hasler.
Avery lived in Dayton for most of his life and was employed with the Oster Corporation, and then retired from Goodman Manufacturing after 21 years. At an early age he earned his private pilot’s license and in his later years he enjoyed going to flea markets.
Avery is survived by his companion of 48 years, Kathy Bishop of Dayton, his son, Randall (Stacey) McCowan of Dayton Mountain, grandson Dakota McCowan of Dayton Mountain, four brothers, Arnold McCowan of Monterrey, Ellis (Maureen) McCowan of Cumberland County, Bobby (Elke) McCowan of Daysville, and David (Tracey) McCowan of CA. Also surviving are his two sisters, Glenna Collette of Little Rock, AR and Lois (Richard) Hosier of Lebanon.
A graveside service for Avery will be held Friday, December 29, 2023 3:00pm at Rhea Memory Gardens.
